Read an Upper Deck Young Guns checklist by season and series
Use season, release series, category and number to distinguish hockey Young Guns references and their named parallels.

Write the season before the number
Young Guns research is easier when the season is part of every record. Several linked hockey references use #201, including Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes in different Upper Deck releases. That repeated number is a practical reminder that a card number has meaning only within a complete set identity. Start with player, season, Upper Deck release, series where established, checklist category and number. Retain the source’s season notation rather than replacing it with a guessed calendar year. If two sources use different date styles, write that difference in your notes and compare the rest of the identification before deciding they disagree.
Open the correct Series One or Series Two page
Upper Deck’s manufacturer checklist lists Jack Hughes #201 in 2019–20 Series One and Cale Makar #493 in 2019–20 Series Two. Use those examples to practice locating the release before searching for the player. A result from the right season but a different series may answer a different question. Keep the page title with your copied row so that the context survives when you paste it into a research notebook. Our editorial recommendation is to store the exact checklist URL rather than a search-results link. This makes the distinction easier to review later without repeating the entire search.
Read the category, player and number together
In Upper Deck’s 2023–24 Series Two checklist, Connor Bedard #451 appears under Base Set — Young Guns and is marked Rookie. Copy the category and number together, then compare that full identity with your candidate. Do not stop at the first occurrence of the player’s name, because a manufacturer checklist can contain many categories for the same player. The nearby columns describe different attributes; they should not all be compressed into the issue title. A careful transcription tells you which row you consulted and which details are essential to the reference you intend to save.
Repeated rows often describe different editions
The same Bedard checklist separately identifies Clear Cut, High Gloss and Outburst Young Guns entries using #451. Makar’s Series Two checklist likewise separates the ordinary Young Guns issue from Clear Cut and Exclusives rows at #493. Those repeated numbers are expected within edition research; they do not make the named versions interchangeable. Give each established edition its own line, and leave its finish unresolved when photographs or wording are insufficient. You do not need to research every parallel to complete a base-focused theme. You do need to keep a parallel you encounter from silently becoming the base entry in your notes.
Separate a player card from a checklist card
A checklist may contain an issue depicting more than one player as well as individual player cards. When a candidate shows shared names, preserve all of them and inspect its own checklist row instead of assigning the individual player’s reference number. Upper Deck’s 2016–17 Series One checklist includes Matthews’s individual #201 and a separate Matthews/Nylander checklist #250. That distinction matters for a player collection even when both items are relevant to the theme. Record why the shared issue interests you, but keep its title and number separate so future searches return the correct collectible.
Finish with a reproducible research note
A useful Young Guns note contains the complete season and release, the category, player, number, edition, checklist URL and date checked. Attach any candidate photographs separately and name the evidence still missing. In CardRoster, Save the exact references and use Compare to inspect their seasons and issue names side by side. Keep your own inventory for physical ownership and condition. If your goal is a rookie timeline, describe the source-supported category without claiming that this small reference list contains every first appearance. A complete note lets another collector follow your research path without needing your memory of the release.
